Assam has a rich legacy of courage in India’s freedom struggle. Early resistance began with the Phulaguri Dhaowa of 1861, a peasant uprising against British taxes. Visionaries like Maniram Dewan and Piyali Barua led Assam’s participation in the 1857 Rebellion, sacrificing their lives for independence. In the 20th century, leaders such as Gopinath Bordoloi, Tarun Ram Phukan, and Nabin Chandra Bardoloi mobilized the masses, supporting movements like Non-Cooperation and Civil Disobedience. Assam’s youth and women actively joined protests, strikes, and rallies. Their collective bravery and vision strengthened India’s freedom struggle, leaving an enduring legacy of patriotism and sacrifice in the region.
